Sherman - Iowa Gulch Route from Leadville Side

While I knew this mountain was less difficult than its neighbors to the north and west, Mt. Sherman was a fun but very quick hike. As I was with some experienced yet virgin 14er hikers, we started a bit late from the trailhead at about 10am. The weather was ideal with partly cloudy skies and a temperature in the high 50‘s.

The trail was a steady climb, with some steeper areas just below the Sheridan - Sherman saddle where we encountered many hikers on their way down. At 13,100‘ on the saddle, we saw many more hikers from the Fairplay side on their way up, so we were never alone on the summit ascent.

About 30 minutes later, we reached the summit after a simple climb to the summit ridge, which is one of the flattest summits I have seen in Colorado. Nonetheless, the climb was great for our first-timers, as it only took approximately 90 minutes to summit. Our time on the top was quite brief as the thunderheads rolled in over the Elks, Elbert, and Massive to the west.

The descent was just as quick and unspectacular, despite the steep areas in Iowa Gulch. We were back at the trailhead just under 90 minutes, so the roundtrip was approximately 3 hours. While this was not the most exciting 14er in Colorado, the hike is ideal for the first timer or intermediate hiker that wants to experience a Colorado 14er.
