I had been acclimating since July 18, after arriving from Austin, Texas. I was able to squeeze in a hike on the Missouri Lake / Fancy Pass trail off Highway 24 (about 8.5 miles between 10-12,000 ft) followed by a hike up Mt. Sherman on July 20th. My brother from Minneapolis arrived on the 21st, and I decided a good acclimation hike for him would be the same Missouri/Fancy Lake hike I had done earlier. Although he is in good shape, he is still coming from flatland, and carrying a little extra weight.
We stayed at the Fireside Inn/Hostel in Breck (recommend it for a reasonably priced dorm room, although small - but interesting hikers/climbers to talk to!) and we were up prompty at 5:30am - to start our hike by 7 (photo ). The first 0.5 mile we felt some light rain, which worried me as I had decided to leave my rainwear behind for this hike (bad decision..). But the rain cleared up, and we took our time with good breaks ascending. We made it to the summit in 3.5 hours, and spent a nice hour up there (with about 50 other people as it was a Sunday). The views of Elbert, Massive, La Plata, Democrat, Lincoln, Bross, Grays, & Torreys were spectacular as the weather on the summit was perfect. On the way down I noticed an intersting cairn that stood out (photo )
Had a nice "climb" down, headed to Alma for a beer at "Alma's only bar", and then decided to drive over to Quincy's in Leadville for some good filet mignon!!
A great trip -- and I was pleased to be able to lead my 44 year old brother up his first 14er!
