 Grays and Torreys Haul

After arriving back in Colorado for leave after being stationed in Pope AFB, NC for almost two years its GREAT to be back home! Its so green here. Miss home so much! So while I was home and living at an altitude at 240ft I was wondering if I could bag me Grays and Torreys. The road up to the TD was decent, the snow slide from the previous trip reporter was gone making easy access to the camp grounds. My buddy and I arrived about 530pm or so and pitched camp. The night was cool and cloudy but a fire kept our spirits up and a Qdoba's burrito filled our stomachs. We woke up around 515am pack our tent and was on the TD at 609am. The trail was pretty nice with snow here and there packed and cold for an early morning, but going down in the afternoon would prove to be sluggish in some spots because the snow had been warmed upped thanks to Mr. Sun! About 3 miles up the trail my buddy had to turn around (he had already bagged other peaks with me but wasn't feeling to good half way up) so I decided to go solo, my first time, and try to bag both summits. The trail leading up to the fork wasn't too bad. A little icy in some spots and post-holing in others. Didn't need crampons or snowshoes. I did slip and fall about 30 feet down the slope and self arrested my self without an ice ax LOL stupid huh? But I did loose sight on the trail for a bit. I totally missed the fork leading up to Grays and so decided to stomp it over to the saddle and bag Torreys first. The saddle was a nice hike and there was no wind but at the summit it was going crazy. The trail up to the summit was kinda hard to follow but I soon made my bid at 1001am. The view was gorgeous. I spent about 20 mins up there taking some pics and a self portrait shot and calling my girl friend. I was so tired though. Coming home from a elevation of 240ft to 14297ft had winded me and my buddy had the jerky I needed for my boost to bag Grays. But my spirits were high until I saw the clouds start to roll in over Grays. Was kinda hard to let her go, but I told her I be back next time to sit upon her head. The walk down wasn't that bad. I did catch a ice patch though and jammed my thumb against some rocks, hurt pretty bad but was well worth it =) The snow from this morning, as I expected it to be, was pretty slushy and some mud, but a great trip down. Ran into some Marmots chasing each other around the rock beds and the wind finally died down. Got down around little after noon. My GPS said I had hiked 8.63 miles
Great trip though, wish I could of gotten Grays but Ill be back for her next time I take leave home

I'm heading up Jube 30th...Should be even clearer then.
By-the-way...welcome back to God's country.
