 Mt. Elbert - East Ridge

Myself and 3 others climbed Mt. Elbert today. We did this as part of 50-50-1, which is a charity climb for Cancer. In every state in the US, climbers summited the states tallest peak to raise money today. Pretty cool idea.

We reached the parking lot @ 6:45am - below were the dirt road started and hiked the 1.8 miles to the trailhead. 4 or 5 cars managed to make it up the road to the trailhead, others stopped due to a stream about 3/4 quarters of the way up the road.

The weather was perfect, a little breeze and no clouds. The climb was straight forward. Took about 45 minutes to get out of the Aspen trees (not complaining, they are incredible) and had Elbert in our sites. The paths were in good shape and there was only two places where snow covered the trail. I suspect that both will be gone over the next couple of days.

I was surprised at how little trouble you can get in on Elbert. There is no exposure anywhere and the final 500 vertical feet were easier than several different sections of the mountain. Summited at 9:20am and stayed there for almost two hours since the weather was so good.

The views from the summit were awesome and I recommend that any one looking to do a 14er with a first timer who is in decent shape should take them to Elbert.
