This was kind of a last minute plan. So much so that we had to borrow a car to get there. In any case, we borrowed my sister's Honda pilot and headed out of Glenwood Springs around 5:00am. The Honda did ok, and we made it to the pearl pass cutoff around 6:45. (11,200ft)
We hit the trail at 7:05 with a steady, but easy pace. When we made our 1st stop we realized that we had better kick it in gear of this was going to take all day.
We were starting to feel like it was just going to be a long hike as we reached montezuma basin.
It looked as if the snowfields might be a problem, but we strapped on our gaiters and made pretty quick work of them. It was late enough that it was pretty easy to kick steps in and just walk right up.
Next came the trek up to the northeast ridge, and the along the summit ridges. I say ridges because there was three saddles and two false summits. None of them were a surprise so it wasn't too dissapointing. There was some pretty good exposure in a couple places along the final summit ridge. It was a nice level of adrenaline rush without being too dangerous. No special techniques are required, but I wouldn't want to do this ridge without respecting the danger.
11:00 The summit was awesome! What an incredible view! We had wanted to cross over to Conundrum, but didn't have the time. Our families were already waiting at the park for us to celebrate the holiday, so we headed back down quick.
The downclimb and ridge walk went pretty quick. And the glisade saved a lot of time. Bruce offered us a ride down from the basin, but we settled for some ice cold gatorade. We got back to the car at 2:00.
