We left central Denver by 5:15am and arrived at the trailhead around 6:40am.
After a stop at the bathroom and photos, we started our hike around 6:55am.
Hiking in the middle of the trail was my favorite part. The wildflowers were amazing.
Can anyone give us the history of this tradition?
Loved this stream
This was a first 14er for us, so we decided to ascend Gray's peak.
The clouds were rolling in heavily and the Gray‘s switchback looked more appealing than the climb up to Torreys.
Arrived at approximately 10:00am, just in time to get in some views before the clouds rolled in, about 5 minutes later.
The descent was easier for Janice and Pam, who made it back at noon. Rya and I took our time with the rocks and arrived at 12:25PM.
What did we bring?
We all carried camelbaks that were 70 or 100oz. Some drank more water than others.
Each had a gateraid/vitamin water type drink, snack, lunch, a fleece, trail shoes, and a shell.
Next time, I would wear hiking boots, just because I am totally uncoordinated at a higher altitude and kept twisting my ankles and knees.
Hiking poles also looked like a good investment if you plan to do rocky trails (especially with a heavy backpack). Light gloves at the top would have been nice.
We had an awesome girl's day at Gray's Peak!!!!

Congrats on your first summit, and great first trip report! I like the pic of the boston terrier, if only mine would not roll over onto his back when I try to get him to wear booties!
The cairns (piles of rocks) are so you don't get lost when the clouds, snow, rain, fog set in. They also stick up above the snow so you can find your way when the trail is covered in 3 feet of snow. Putting an additional rock on top is something people do for fun. Congrats on the experience.
on your first summit! I am taking my wife and 9 yr. old daughter on the same hike in 2 weeks. Truly hope my daughter can make it! Congratulations....now you have the bug like the rest of us.
