snowmass via s.mass lake (day trip)

i thought i would post this trip report for a few reasons:

1. to show that an overweight 50 year year old from new york can still grind out a 21 mile day hike solo.

2. to show that i guesstimate not having pics will probably get me 1/10th the number of hits as canyon goddess‘s BEAUTIFUL REPORT!

3. to relay info about the route.

i started from the snowmass lake trailhead at 418am. my .4 oz headlamp actually worked. i was a little freaked when i spooked some large animal in the dark. i‘ve decided that i prefer to have partners when hiking in the dark! i arrived at the log jam to find four horses tethered just before the jam. i EASILY negotiated the jam and made it up to snowmass lake just before 8am. i followed a couple from gunnison around the lake and up the gully area. i loved the route that the gunny couple chose: cross diagonally across solid scree then exit right at a cairn. proceed up the grassy slopes. very sweet going up the grassy slopes. i separated from the gunnies going up to the intermediate bump on the ridge. i then continued to the summit solo. i definitely found some class 3 climbing on the ridge. i got to the summit at 1144am.

the slog back down to the car seemed to take forever and was marked by a few water shortages. but i did it! just under 15 hours roundtrip. this was my last peak here in colo. until next summer. thank you to all the partners i‘ve met up with!!!! and a special thanks to the gunny couple. it was very kind of you to offer me your extra food and water (even if i was too stubborn to take you up on your offer)!

looking forward to next summer already,

dave

Thanks for the compliments, guys.

Dave, I'm in awe of your one day accomplishment - and hey, who's to say your backside wouldn't have garnered lots of hits - you don't know until you try it! Congrats.

Congratulations Dave! After hiking with you on Mount Wilson, I am not surprised by this feat of endurance and character. You rock! Please don't hesitate to drop me a note when you return to Colorado. I would be honored to climb with you in the future! Cheers!

That is quite an accomplishment. But I think you would have even less hits if you had similar pictures as Canyon Goddess of your 50 year old overweight backside.
