Mt Antero - Baldwin Gulch Update |
Climbed Antero today-one little tidbit I‘ll pass on is in regards to the access 4WD road. At the junction between the turn off (CO 278) to Antero and continuing on to Baldwin Gulch, the forestry svc has put two sawhorse barricades blocking 278, partially, as the recent rains have caused the creek to overflow the road. The signs read "closed-unsafe for driving." The water overflows the road here, and then again about 1/4 mile further up. We were law abiding today and parked behind the barricade, but soon discovered about 20 trucks/suvs higher up 278, including several that drove to 13,000+. I‘m not advocating ignoring the barricade, and I don‘t want anyone doing anything unsafe as water can be deadly with cars, but FYI: As of today, the road seemed quite passable for most folks despite the closure.
The long and short of it was that we hiked in from 10,800 instead of the more typical spot up 278. Adds some mileage.
Also, the rains have made the 4wd road rather soft and loose, especially coming down from the top.
Summited later than I wanted, ~ 11:30, barely made it off before some isolated rain clouds rolled over.
Here are the obligatory summit shots. Thanks.
