 Big pile ‘o rocks

I got up at 5:00 and checked the weather in Breck. The radar showed a solid patch of rain from Aspen to Summit CO. After having to cancel my first attempt at Quandary last week, I wasn't going to be put off this time. I hoped that the rain would pass by as I drove up from Arvada. I hit rain just above Idaho Springs and it continued until the tunnel. I popped out of the tunnel to broken clouds and no rain. It was cold, cloudy and windy when I reached the trailhead at 8:00. The entire trip up to the ridge clouds kept screaming by giving me an indication of the winds that awaited up higher. The climb itself wasn't anything special as this mountain doesn't offer much in visual beauty. I don't see what the quandary was in naming it. "Pile 'o Rocks" would've worked fine. Not much green tundra or pretty flowers, just a heap of broken rock. Anyhow, once treeline was broken, a cloud covered summit appeared. It stayed covered until I summited at 11:00.

I didn't plan on staying long on top but it started to clear as I was leaving giving a nice view of Massive and Elbert to the SW, DeCaLiBron to the S, Grays and Torreys to the NE.

The winds kept it cold but it never rained. I headed down and was at my truck at 1:15. Not a bad day considering I didn't have a full day to hike.

P.S. The rock stairs ROCKED! Thanks CFI
