PIKES PEAK CHALLENGE--SEPTEMBER 8th, 2007
A HIKE FOR BRAIN INJURY AWARENESS
This was my first year participating in this event. I first heard about from this web-site and knew I would be hiking it.
A close family friend back in Iowa was in a serious car accident this past January. The doctor‘s first told us she may not make it, or ever be able to walk or talk again. For those of us that personally know her, know how strong of a person she really is. We knew she would fight. Seven months after her accident she was released from the hospital......walking and talking!!!! Recovering is still taking place, but everyday gets a little better.
Today I hiked for my good friend Erika!
Starting temps were in the mid-50‘s. I knew it was going to be a great day.
A beautiful Colorado sunrise.
Here is the first view of the summit.
I immediately thought "wow, that‘s a long way away." Then I remembered why, and more importantly who I was hiking for. Those first thoughts were gone.
Here is a picture of me about 5 miles up the trail.
Here is a picture of the trail just after mile 7.
In the sub-alpine area, you come across this beautiful view.
With three miles to go, I soon realized I had forgotten how beautiful this part of the trail is.
Here is a good view of the trail.
The summit is near!!
Me at the finish!
A couple of summit shots.
The weather was absolutely perfect! We couldn‘t have had a better day to hike America‘s Mountain. I was amazed at how many brain injury survivors were up there hiking today. Congrats to all of them!!!
And to Erika: You were thought of every step of the way today. Just like you are thought of everyday. It was my honor to hike for you. I can‘t wait to see you next month. Keep fighting! I love you!
