After a very restful night at the way overpriced Best Western in Buena Vista, we arrived at the Cottonwood TH at 5:15 AM for a family and friends day of hiking this long jaunt. My cousin Don had not done a 14er in 10 years and exersises only from wife pressure, overweight, but had good determination. 6 hikes departed at 5:30AM radios and lots of gear for bad weather (major blue sky day). Peggy (whom tried out for the Olympics in speed walking) and I led the way, but quickly dusted our 4 friends but we always stayed in touch by radio. Hiking in the dark was cool at 35 degrees, but the trail was well marked and in good shape the entire route.
We crested treeline in 90 minutes and entered the Bighorn area, first light on Columbia and Harvard was most impressive. Don and gang about 1.3 miles behind us, but safe, and we continued to the summit with no issues in about 4.5 hours. Peggy and I stayed on top for 90 minutes in a no wind, blue sky day and finally Cuzin Don made in to the summit, about 6 hours. (still made it)
We took the usual pictures, Peggy and I downclimbed back to the trail (again most impressive trail) and trucked in the blue sky weather. We ran out of water near treeline, but both had water filter bottles, always a big plus for the low weight.
13.7 miles later, back at the TH for a cold one, and waited for Don and his 3 friends. Two hours later, the radio crackled and they were 1/2 mile away from the parking lot, safe, tired.
This was my 40th 14er trip and after all the weekly workouts, training, roller blading, biking, cardio, my Cuz Don still makes the summit with no training. Harvard is long, steep near the last mile, and had great views of many 14ers from the summit.
Total time for Peggy and I was 9 hours including summit time and lots of water breaks.
