Peak: Culebra Peak (14,047)
Date: Sunday, September 30, 2007, (0715-1130)
Team: RockParkour, aboyd628, Inky6900, conradical +1, and Pivvay +1
Trailhead: Cielo Vista Ranch
Route: 'Roach Route' to the Northwest Ridge

This hike was supposed to take place on Saturday the 29th. A few of us showed up at the ranch gate to some awful weather. We compared weather reports and voted on coming back on Sunday morning. This worked out well, since more hikers and dogs were able to attend the next day. We had all 7 people and 5 dogs in our group summit on a beautiful, clear day! (...and I'm told they were the first dogs on Culebra Peak in over ten years!)

Here is the group headed up the two track from the parking area. We took the two track to the top of the ridge and followed the ridge to the big cairn.

This was taken halfway between the two track and the big cairn. The parking area and two groups of hikers are faintly squared off in red.

...and finally we reached the big cairn! My pup, Freckle, is wearing her little jacket. (Our destination is shown in the background.) It was well below freezing here. My camelbak tube was frozen by now. I would go the next three hours without anymore water...

After making a right turn at the big cairn, you can see these two pictures with our obvious route traced to the peak. Though there wasn‘t a true "trail", the path is worn down enough to find an easy route across the ridge.

This is taken from the halfway point between the saddle and the summit, on a false peak. Here the big cairn is circled, the next hiker is squared, and our route is traced with the faint red line.

...and looking back from the summit to the false peak!

Red Mountain, and the ridge leading there. It was far too cold to attempt!

... and finally, the gorgeous drive back to the ranch!
