 Mt. Elbert

Myself and two friends from Superior, CO stayed the night at The Timberline Motel (I think that is what it was) we got to the trailhead at 0700.
View at the trailhead.

It was pretty chilly early so sweatshirts were nice but I bet we weren't ten minutes into the hike before we shed those and the long pants. We took frequent rest and hydration breaks throughout (this was my 1st 14er, so wer probably took more breaks because of me than my friends would have taken on their own) and took lots of pictures, took in the views and observed some of the wildlife along the way.

The majestic bull marmot.

Resting the legs and trying not to look too miserable. I'm on the left, Ryan is on the right

And the view of the summit from the treeline

We reached the summit at 1130 and spent about 40 minutes resting and visiting with the surprisingly large crowd on top for being a Wednesday.

It was slightly more humid that day than it usually gets in that area and one of the guys on top was mentioning something about smoke from Utah wildfires that was making the skies a little hazy, but the views of Mt. Massive and La Plata were great.

Hazy skies from about 13,500 ft. & 12,000 ft.

We headed down slightly after noon and arrived back at the TH parking area at about 1350. We celebrated my 1st, Ryan's 10th and Sara's 4th 14er at The Silver Dollar Saloon in Leadville and then headed back to Superior and took in a Rockies game and enjoyed a few more cold ones. 8)

Everyone we came across on the trail was in great spirits and were supportive and friendly. Can't wait to do another 14er soon. I learned a lot (I overpacked for this hike) and it is an experience I'll share and use to encourage some of my friends to join me sometime.

Great Job!

It looks as if you had a great hike! I climbed/hiked Mount Elbert only a couple of weeks before you, and I also had a great time. We were some hours earlier at the top, and not so many other people were there. However, we also overpacked, since it was our first 14er...I will learn from experience!
