Part 3 Chicago Basin: Windom and the descent.

Peak: Windom
Route: Climbed Summer Ridge, skied widowmaker
Crew: gb, jcwhite, mtnbikerskierchick, Jarrett
Date: 5/11/08

Continued from parts 1 and 2
We skied back to our gear stash at 13000 and decided that climbing the summer ridge looked like a better option for getting up windom than did the couloir.
But rather than take the time to put the skins on we just started a quick boot pack to the ridge

After gaining the ridge we grabbed some water and food, but I was just too excited to sit around for long and took off up the ridge towards the top:

I got to the top and had a little bit of solitude, but soon remembered it was mother's day. Well...I have been carrying this cell phone around, it worked! I called and said happy mother's day and she told me that if I was home I would be doing yardwork for her...yikes! Glad I'm on top of a mountain instead!

Everyone showed up shortly thereafter:

Time to ski:
Jarrett lead the way across the traverse from the summit boulder:

But we got around the corner to a mound of snow that was at least as high as the highest rock on the summit:

This one looks weird:

Looking at our line:

We skied out the basin and back down our chutes:

Looking back on the day

That night we went to bed planning to get up reasonably early the next day so we could descend on frozen snow.
The next morning we got up and did just that, we packed and headed out. It only took 3.5 to 4 hrs to get out. Here are some pics:

Finishing up

We stored beers

Gb patiently waiting

This guy showed up and told us that he was on the train when it picked Davenport up...but he didn't know who it was at the time

The train sells beer

It was a great weekend with great partners. Franks got just one more, and I imagine it will be coming to web blog near you very soon.
Great weekend guys!
Out.

Hey, it would have been nice to be invited to this one. Just kidding, the hike up there with my 65lbs of gear probably would have killed me. ...Researching choppers, now. Illegal, schmillegal!!

I can‘t wait to visit that basin for the first time. The blanket of snow must add to the quiet solitude. I, too, am most impressed that you could haul all that gear up there. It looks like most of you carried two packs: one overnight pack, one ski/avy pack. I guess graduation congrats are in order, too! What‘s next?

Be free, Bud. You are doing amazing things. Very, very proud of you. And I am saving the moving of the boulders in the yard for you until you have skied all the 14ers....before you start the 13ers...
