 Giant snow cone

Took a group of three others on Bierstadt this morning. Temps were well above freezing, but there was still enough snow on the ground to keep things interesting...
None of us had snowshoes, but I doubt it would make too much of a difference. There were other folks on the trail with snowshoes and it looked like they were postholing as bad as we were. About 13,500 the wind really picked up and our group ended up getting split up. With the warmer temps we decided to turn around knowing it would be a pain to get back to the parking lot with the snow getting so soft. It took about two hours of up to the waist postholing to get back to the car. It was about four feet of slush with a few inches of mud underneath. Even with goretex boots and gaiters feet still got soaked. Not the most pleasant day on a mountain I‘ve ever had, but it still beat oklahoma.

That sounds exactly like the trip I had on Bierstadt on May 17th only it sounds like the snow was probably even in worse shape for you. It‘s a fair warning to anyone thinking of Bierstadt at this point would be an enjoyable hike.
