Ski descent of the the Y coulier & the South Bowl of Devils Playground
After an incredible season of powder skiing in Summit county & Aspen, Tim & I could only think of one line to finish out the season - Pikes famous Y coulier on the N face. Here is our planned route.
At the summit, geared up & ready to drop the Y.
Tim begins his descent w/o cramp-ons, rope or ice axe which we soon determined was not a good idea. He dropped his pack, I threw him a rope & he climbed back up.
Marmot sent their CEO to supervise this operation. Talk about king of the hill.
With webbing secure, carabiner & figure 8 in place I'm self-belaying down to the softer snow to find & build our launch pad.
Tim is hanging by a thread.
With climbing gear packed away we ice climb down to the launch pad.
I'm clicked in & readdy to drop.
Steep?
Sizing up the rock band.
In the clear & rippin.
Tim skiing down to the Bottomeless Pit.
Tim - hoppin & boppin!
My signature victory pic.
Can you say Stairmaster?
On all 4s approaching the bottom of the Y.
Is this a dream or is that the summit?
With the top 15 meters being almost 50 degrees covered in rock & ice - full climbing gear & repelling was required.
Failing the manditory break test at Glen Cove caused us to sit tight for 30 min. while the breaks cool - NOT. Tim drove me back up to the top of Devils Playground so I could hit the South Bowl.
Y - Y not? Because we can for only $10 per person & it's right in our back yard. Until next year. Have a great summer.

Well my wife & Tim's wife would like that however Tim (bckcntryskr) & I have a goal to ski at least one day per month this year so I‘ll probably take my ski gear w/ me on any 14ers we hike this summer to get a few turns in.
It was an awesome ending to a long ski season. The melt was definetly in full swing, though not even a smal slide was noted. You could hear a loud difference between the route down and the route up, as the sun continued its duty. Always great to be out with BCD.
Glad to see you two were able to enjoy that route - I know you‘ve been waiting for the weather window. Looks like I may have to wait til next season though. Cool trip report.
