| Dead Dog Delight |
In order to train for a late July ascent of Mt. Rainier (woo-hoo!), my climbing partner and I decided to say hello to Torreys via Dead Dog Couloir. My advice - get your butts up there right now!! The snow is great and you will have the best glissade ever, should you choose to descend that way. I, like a ding-dong, forgot my camera, so I have no photos for you, but I wanted to give you some beta.
We crossed the snowfield to the base of Dead Dog a bit past the turnoff to Kelso Ridge. While a bit mushy, the snow is still firm enough that one neither postholes, nor needs snowshoes. As far as the actual couloir, crampons were not necessary and the snow was very easy to kick-step while ascending.
After summiting, we walked down the standard trail to the large snowfield between Grays and Torreys and, ice axes in hand, glissaded down to the base of the mountain then followed the standard trail the rest of the way out.
Get there early! The traffic is already brisk and we lucked out on getting the last space in the parking areas by the trailhead. Also, if you try to take a sedan up there, you'd better be darn good at taking cars to places they have no business being. The road is eaten up in places and a standard vehicle would most likely not have proper clearance, bottom out, and be in everyone's way. Then, of course, we'd have to kill you. So if you're unsure, don't do it.
