 Failed to Summit again

This was my second attempt to summit Quandary Peak. My wife Lorraine and I tried last year and made it just above treeline before turning back, that was our very first attempt at a 14er and I was hooked even though we turned back. Sunday I took a solo run at Quandary and got so close to the summit (about 150 yds.) that I‘m almost ashamed of myself for not reaching the top. I will not give up though, I will summit Quandary as well as other 14ers in this beautiful state we live in. God Bless Colorado!

Man, keep on trying! Once you reach that summit, you‘ll forget all the pain and suffering that it takes to get there.

I was one summit it the north of you on Sunday (Pacific Peak). What kept you from the summit?

A real bad headache, hands so swollen I couldn‘t make a fist, seeing spots or flashes. I know, it sounds like I‘m making excuses, but I‘ll get it!

I turned around above 14,000‘ on Grays with my wife. I tend to look back on that as a positive. For me, if I can turn around so close to the summit, I feel that I can make better decisions about the route, how I am feeling, and the weather. You will hear/see this a lot, but the mountains will always be there.

To quote Clint, ”A man‘s got to know his limitations.” It‘s a wise - and very tough - decision to know when to turn around.

With the experience gained here, you‘ll stand a better shot next time. Hang in there, you‘ll get it!

Thanks for all the encouragement guys and I don‘t plan on giving up, that‘s not who I am! I definetly need some conditioning training of some sort. Third times a charm, I look forward to it...

I turned around on Quandary this year too! In January we were close to the summit and the wind and weather kept us off (-22). At least we got to meet Horton The Quandary Dog!

Oh well, Quandary sure is a quandary for some of us...

You are a better person than I am

I often fail to to submit to my limitatons. The only thing that allows me to turn back is the idea that someone would have to come and get me. Your choice was the right one, and my hat is off to you.

I will be attempting it for the first time tomorrow.
