Once again, another blissful day in Colorado. Flawless morning weather and a wonderful mountain to hike, what could be better?
The Iron Gates route on Mt. Meeker offers a unique perspective to the Longs Peak area as well as a fun scramble. From the Chasm Meadows Ranger station, turn left and face the rock structures pictured here, these are called the Iron Gates. There are two distinct gullies between these rock structures, the left being the easies, and our route to Meeker's East ridge. .
Its steep, and somewhat loose.
Once on top of the ridge, continue up, staying somewhat high on the ridge.
This will take you to Meekers unofficial and lower East summit. From here, you will see the knife edge ridge leading to the West summit (13,911). Past the knife edge, route finding to the summit is a little tricky. I found staying to the right of the ridge to be the easiest, however, there were many other possibilities to keep the scramble at a class 3.
Descending the loft route is preferable, much less loose and less steep (still class 3), however, given the amount of snow this year, I choose to descend back though the Iron Gates, not having the appropriate gear for steep snow. Descending the Iron Gates is long, tedious, and somewhat miserable.
