Grays and Torreys Combination |
Lonnie (my 11 year old) and I decided at the last minute to go climb Grays and Torreys as a starter warm-up for our 10 14ers in 10 days trip that we are going to do later this summer. We left Denver at 4:00 a.m. on June 29, and arrived at the Stephens Gulch trailhead at about 5:15 a.m. The road to the trailhead was in pretty bad shape, but my Pathfinder didn't have any problems.
We started hiking about 5:30 a.m. The trail was reasonably dry. We passed a couple of snow patches on the way up to Grays 30' x 30' approximately, but they were pretty well packed. We reached the summit about 8:30 a.m.
Looking toward Torreys, it appeared that the path was clear, so after a lunch/breakfast, we started up Torreys and reached the summit around 10:00 a.m. The day was warm and beautiful. As we were sitting on the summit, we saw a mom and her 11-year-old son who were coming up over Kelso Ridge - amazing. We started talking and found that we both loved to rock climb, so later this year, we are going to try to get together with our boys and pull down some routes.
On the way down, we had to post-hole through a pretty large snowfield to get back to the trail going down from Grays. The rest of the way down, the snowfields were melting quite fast, so our boots got pretty soaked. We were back at the car by 12:30 p.m.
Grays/Torreys Elevation Gain 3,600 feet
Roundtrip distance 8.25 miles
