Moms first 14er in the snow!?

Well, it was to be my moms 1st 14er. She had trained for 4 1/2 months back home in Wisconsin to do this. I specifically told them to come out in July rather than their usual June to climb due to all the snow we got this year. So, what happens? It flippin snows in July!! Go figure!! The trip started out a litte slow at 520

and I did not think she would make it. I wound up carrying her pack for her.

It began raining about 45 minutes into the climb and I had a few choice words for mother nature due to the fact that it had not rained in about 2 months and the day we choose to climb it rains! So we decided to finish the valley and see how things went. We finished the valley and kept climbing and then the rain began to turn to snow. Probably a good thing that the summit was fogged in or else we might have been turning around. Eventually through it all my mom made it to the summit. I was very proud of her for her hard work and for not giving up even though I know the thought crossed her mind a few times. The summit was celebrated briefly with no views and some pretty cold temps but was warmed up with some cheese and crackers and a small bottle of wine. Holding true to the Wisconsin in us we had to have a celebratory beer when we got back to the car!

It was truly a mental test yesterday...not so much the altitude or the terrain, but that weather was just so demoralizing! It‘s great that your folks pushed through it and made it to the summit.

Thanks for the ride down, too. An extra 2.5 miles in the rain to end the day wouldn‘t have been fun at all!
