Mount Meeker- Longs Peak |
As a group of five, the hike began at 1:45 a.m. Headlamps, food, water, and layers on hand we moved fast with the goal of reaching Chasm Lake by sunrise. Making excellent time we reached our first destination around 4:00 a.m. giving us an hour to star gaze and relax. It was quite cold, so we bundled up and found a nice flat rock to lounge on. The stars were incredible - shooting stars, satellites, constellations - you could see it all. We waited for sunrise to begin hiking towards Mount Meeker. Not to mention, the sunrise at Chasm was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. We then worked our way up, summiting Meeker at about 8:00 a.m. After a snack break and photos on Meeker, we moved our way across the Loft/Saddle towards Clark's Arrow. Exhausted, but eager we rounded the corner and began the class 3 climb up Longs. Having gone this more difficult route, I was wishing at parts that I had more equipment/experience with this type of climbing, but using caution I worked my way up. At one point our group realized we lost our cairns and had ascended when we weren't supposed to , noticing our carins about 150 ft below. Having found our route again, fatigued and ready to summit we worked our way to the homestretch. We reached the summit of Longs at approximately 11:00 a.m. - making great time. We stayed there to eat lunch and take a few photos, beginning our long trek down around 11:30. We descended through the keyhole route and we reached the trailhead at about 4:00 p.m. feeling tired, but proud. It was my first 14er and an amazing experience.
