Me and a buddy tried this route on Friday, 8/1/08. The description by Bill Middlebrook makes it sound like the start of the trail through the willows ("some willow bashing) is just a little inconvenient. It is much worse than that. We did MAJOR willow bashing through mud and water for 45 minutes until we finally waved the white flag.
We abandoned the Mt. Evans idea and hiked straight up hill until we got onto the heavily traveled Bierstadt trail.
I would NOT recommend this route unless you are a 20 year old triathelete in outstanding shape who doesn‘t mind getting completely soaked from your knees down and you enjoy wresting willows with your arms, legs, head, etc. I am a 48 year old guy in decent shape, and have climbed more than 20 Fourteeners.
This trail sucks and I will not be trying it again. I am going to take a different route up Evans. If you have any questions or want more info, shoot me and email and I‘ll get back to you.
