Mt Evans - West Ridge from Guanella Pass

Me and a buddy tried this route on Friday, 8/1/08. The description by Bill Middlebrook makes it sound like the start of the trail through the willows ("some willow bashing) is just a little inconvenient. It is much worse than that. We did MAJOR willow bashing through mud and water for 45 minutes until we finally waved the white flag.

We abandoned the Mt. Evans idea and hiked straight up hill until we got onto the heavily traveled Bierstadt trail.

I would NOT recommend this route unless you are a 20 year old triathelete in outstanding shape who doesn‘t mind getting completely soaked from your knees down and you enjoy wresting willows with your arms, legs, head, etc. I am a 48 year old guy in decent shape, and have climbed more than 20 Fourteeners.

This trail sucks and I will not be trying it again. I am going to take a different route up Evans. If you have any questions or want more info, shoot me and email and I‘ll get back to you.

Happy climbing!

...and hacking through the swamp almost killed my spirit. The fact that I‘m only 5‘3 and couldn‘t see really well didn‘t help at all. Any suggestions on finding these ”long trail segments?”

I'll echo Bill - I'm another over 40 guy in significantly poorer shape than Bill, I‘m *quite* sure. I climbed Evans by this route a few weeks ago with a couple of buddies and it really wasn't a big deal. There was *definitely* a solid climbers trail through the willows. We sunk in the mud a fair bit, but that was solved by good boots and gaitors. Finding that trail is absolutely the crux of the route.

20 year old triathelete?
I just did the route last week and it was no big deal - and I'm a 41-year old fat dude. The key is in the route-finding. If you spent that much time willow-bashing, then you didn't find the long trail segments south of the creek. Seriously! They are there.

When I was just there, it wasn't even as muddy as I've seen it in the past.

I‘ve gone through the willows to the shortcut gully, and like Bill said, there is a route. There is also an easier route to the north, around the willows, and here‘s some past discussion about that route:
