 cold and windy

I left my cabin at 1:00 pm for an afternoon ascent of sheep mtn and 11830 on the Pikes Peak quad. It was a cold, windy and cloudy this day. I drove up the gold camp road to FS 376, I parked at the Colorado Springs watershed road closure.

I headed up the ring the peak trail towards the west. At the highpoint I left the trail for pt 11830. I followed a fence for a while before reaching the summit. Along the way there are a lot of neat tree skeletons.

I spent very little time on the summit of 11830 because there were 40 mph wind gusts. I took shelter in a boulder cove for a few minutes before proceding to Sheep Mtn. Looking back at pt 11830.

The red is my ascent route and the blue is my descent. The trickiest part of the whole trip was navigating through the brush at the saddle, There is an animal trail if you look hard enough. I followed that to the top of the brush.

From the top there is a false summit and a high ridge connecting it to the real summit.

Looking back at the false summit from the summit.

I stayed on the east side of the ridge to avoid being blown away, the wind was terrible at this point.

I reached the summit and stood on top for just long enough to say I was on the summit and then took cover on the east side of the summit block where I signed the register, I was the first to sign in the log for 2008.

Some views from the summit.

On the way back I dropped to the east side of pt 11830 and met up with the ring the peak trail at the stream crossing.

Despite the wind this was a great hike, solitude will great you even on Pikes Peak, this hike gives you a unique vantage point of the peak, one that not many people see.
