ok this is my 8th 14er and Sheps 4th. My trusty scooby got about half a mile from the TH then just like the info on this site said, then the road got too bad so we had to start hiking early! It was about 9am and there was one SUV near me and two pickups at the actual TH. I signed in and off we went. I had Shep on a 15ft leash and he had his booties on. The trail was pretty easy going up to the treeline and even up the boulder fields but then it started to get steep so it was slow going! I could eventually see people ahead of me the higher I got and at one point I was overtaken by this young dude. He lived local and said he was going to bag Massive then do Elbert.
During my ascent as I was scrambling up a steep section I noticed that Shep had lost a bootie. At $60 a set and they don‘t sell individuals, I was forced to backtrack and look for it but I could not find it. I figured I would look harder on the way down. When I was about 30 mins from the summit, here comes the young dude back down. I told him that he had perfect weather to bag Elbert but he said he wasn‘t sure if he was going to attempt it as he didn‘t bring enough food. I had a spare Cliff bar which I offered him and then I told him about Sheps missing bootie and he said that if he found it then he would leave it at the TH. I passed about 12 other people coming down before I hit the summit so I had plenty of people looking out for the bootie.
At the summit I got chatting to a German guy and he asked me if I could take his photo. Wow, this dude had a regular camera so I had to take off my baseball cap so I could look through the viewfinder. haha Well I forgot to put it back on when he took my pics and so I have hat head. I guess tradition now is to have a celebration drink at the summit so on the menu today was some Crown Royal. Oooh then not longer after this another guy summited and tells me that he found Sheps bootie. I hold my hand out all excited but he then proceeds to tell me that he left on a big rock so I would see it on the way back down It would of been nice if he had brought it up but I guess at least I knew I had a good chance of finding it now.
Once I had ate I started to head back down with a little more haste than usual. I had made my own little cairn pile when I realized that we had lost a bootie and so at that point I slowed down and kept an eye out. I scoped the area for about 20 mins but no such luck. Then the dude who found the bootie came jogging by me (some people make me sick!!) and asked if I had found it? I explained that I had been telling everyone going down so I was confident that someone had already picked it up for me.
Man it was hot out there also and we ran out of water right before the treeline. A lady from a group of 6 who I had caught up to offered me two bottles of water as they had plenty so I graciously accepted. I am thinking about buying some hiking poles as this was the steepest hike I have ever done and my knees were killing me on the way down. Back at the TH there was Sheps bootie so I know the young dude found it for me! If you read this board, Cheers mate!! It took me 3 1/2 hours to summit and 2 1/2 to get back down.

Wow, a mini-bottle of Crown at the summit... or you're a really big guy
I really enjoy Red wine... but I can't bring myself to lug a bottle up the mountain with me... no matter how little I take, I always end up with more than I need... of course, I know I'd drink a bottle of wine up there, just not too confident I'd be able to safely make it back down
You‘ve got a good climbing dog there. I took my collie up the easy route, and he still developed a limp (see Massive undertaking). I would still like to go up the SW route though (by myself). Great pics.
