I had to plan something somewhat short since I had a harder physical trip planed on the 9th (non- mountain related). I chose to tap into the northern Sawatch since I haven't climbed many peaks in that area, and "Fancy Peak" and point 12,940 looked good. After leaving late from Denver, my wife and I arrived at the Fancy Pass trailhead around 8:30 AM and started hiking around 9:00 AM. We followed the Fancy Pass trail up to Fancy Lake and then continued on up to Fancy Pass. The trail was excellent and was a nice shift in pace to some of the other thirteener bushwhacks I have experienced this year. Since my wife just bought new boots, she stopped at the top of Fancy Pass, and waited for me to tag "Fancy Peak." As I proceeded north from the saddle, the ridge initially was rough class 2 but eased into a nice hike to the summit. The views to the west were excellent.
After returning to Fancy Pass, I proceeded on the ridge south to point 12,940. The snow was definitely sticking around on the north facing slopes. At ~12,700 I traversed southeast to bypass point 12,867 and continued on the northwest ridge to the summit of 12,940. From the summit of 12,940, Savage Peak looked awesome; I can't wait to return next spring to climb the Savage couloir.
I descended on snow covered rock directly down the northeast face of 12,940 toward Fancy Lake where I met up with my wife. Since I wasn't in a hurry to get back to the car, I ended up taking a nap at the lake, and enjoyed a perfect weather day on the hike out.
