South Ridge & West Gullies 2008 |

5/19/2008 It was only fair that I spend a day grovelling up this mountain from the very bottom. I used to love to rally up this road in Ol' Blue, watch the sunset from the peak, and wander the back roads to Gunnison. I also tried to snowmobile the Baldwin road, but turned back with steep side hills before it changes direction. This time I brought a bike, which was no help after the first stretch. Skinning this road was fine, and the only alternative to Browns and Little Browns. Those trails are tough. I used crampons to cross the icy log over the creek, but that was the only time they were needed. As the road started to switchback up the dry slopes, I stayed in the deep gully to the left, and enjoyed a nice view of the upper face. I joined a road further up. I left it again at a switchback, taking a direct path to the saddle. I hiked the ridge from there. recent tracks It was a good thing this peak received some snow out of the last storm, because there was barely enough to get off the top on a board. Little Browns Princeton, South Face Tab, North Face time to shred The thin snow off the summit was not as bad as I thought it would be since the snow was still frozen there. The snow improved as I descended for the pass. Some side stepping was needed to get back to the saddle. I descended to the west side, staying left to the road, and followed these tracks from the road to the gullies, and cruised to the creek, then skied to the bike, and back out to the main road again. A long, but enjoyable day. |
