This TH is just north of I-70 exit 203, making a quick drive from the Denver area.

Eccles Pass
The trail is dry to about 11000'. Snowbanks then start crossing the trail, but reaching Eccles Pass poses no special effort.

From Eccles Pass, we dropped north into a snow-filled basin. Fortunately, the snow is firm, and we had almost no post-holing. We dropped about 400', eventually contouring west to reach the area of Red Buffalo Pass, which maintains a huge cornice.

From the pass we went up the south ridge of Red Peak, which seems to try to be class 3 but never quite gets there. Clouds were building, but we had some nice views of Mt Silverthorne and the Snow-Valhalla ridge.

We kept a good pace on the return, although the re-ascent to Eccles Pass caused some pain. The early start and steady pace were needed today, as we had light rain for the last 30 minutes of the hike and drove out in a serious downpour!
