My husband (Greenknight) aka Zach decided he wanted to do Torrey's Peak for his 33rd Birthday. Having already done the standard route to Gray's Peak a few weeks before i decided I wanted a different view. OH BOY, did I get one. We started out at Loveland pass on the West Ridge route to Torrey's. We had stayed up late the night before trying to get all our stuff together. I thought I would be cheap and not print the trailhead pics. This might have been a bad idea as we started out wondering if we should go left, or right? The fact that it was still dark didn't help matters much.
So, after figuring out which way we thought we should go, we headed out at a fast clip. There was a fellow about 50 yards behind us that would be our motivator to haul butt. We wanted to have the mountain to ourselves as much as possible. As the sun rose we started to see just how far we were going to be going.
We would find later on that this was not an issue as we only encountered one group of three who had chosen to take the standard route up and then come down through the west ridge.
We had no idea we would be bagging our first 13er today (Cupid), let alone two! (Grizzly)The saddle was beautiful and we saw lots of Pica running around. Lots of different scat and birds as well. It was a beautiful hike but very long. Had some trouble getting over Grizzly Peak as we wandered off coarse and ended up going the long way; weaving through all the rocks on the South side of Grizzly. Following the small gully up the back side of Torrey's wasn't too bad. The trail (if you can call it that) faded in and out so we tried to stay to the big rocks and go straight up.We encountered lots of nice people on the summit, one from California and 3 fellows from Louisiana. Had some lunch and an 8oz. Coors Light to celebrate and headed back down. As we were descending we saw a family of 4 mountain goats off in the distance. We decided to go across Torrey's at an angle to give the mountain goats a wide berth.
Once we lost sight of them we saw the group of 3 we had spoken to on the summit. We also saw a nasty storm coming in from behind us accompanied with a healthy helping of lightening. This helped to kick us into gear. Each time we came over a hill I expected to see our trailhead but it just kept going, and going, and going.
We had a great time but I have to say it was more than we expected.
Would recommend this route to anyone who likes to be in solitude and enjoy a meandering hike.
