This was summit number 2 for the weekend. My wife, 10-year-old son and I had just done the Mt. Elbert Northeast Ridge the day prior, so we were in the mood for a shorter hike this time. We also had two energetic dogs with us, who could have hiked Denali, if asked.
We got a leisurely 8:30 start at Summit Lake and took the route up Mt. Spalding and along Evans' west ridge. It was rather refreshing to skip the usual more gentle approach trail and get started right away on steep and rocky terrain. This entire route from the lake all the way to the summit is very fun. The middle portion of the route does not have a clearly defined trail, so it made for a good lesson for our son on how to choose best routes and use cairns.
We got to the summit at 11:30 and had a relaxing lunch. We opted to return via the Northeast Face at about noonish. That was the end of the enjoyment. That route really stinks. Its almost entirely loose talus. Every step is followed by a slide. I feel really sorry for the number of people who decided to go up that way. Glad we chose differently. We got back to the truck at about 2:00. So 3 hours up and 2 down.
Didn't realize it until much later, but we got credit for "West Evans" on this route!
