From Silver Creek TH
Distance: 12.8 mile RT per Roach (my GPS said a bit less)
Vertical: 4,727 feet
Time: 7 hours 40 minutes
Some friends of mine decided to join me for the drive down to Lake City this weekend. They were interested in relaxing but I wanted to at least get in one hike on some unclimbed centennials while I was in the area. I debated between Half Peak and these two and decided to go for two peaks instead of one.
We camped above the TH and then I drove the car down to the parking area early on the morning of the 4th. The morning was a bit cold but that was nothing compared to having to dig around in the disorganized car to find all my gear. Eventually I succeeded in my treasure hunt and set off at 5:15am. The trail was familiar from climbing Sunshine and Redcloud years ago and with no issues I cruised up and hit the saddle with Redcloud in a little over 2 hours.
The traverse over to 13,832 looks interesting from this perspective but it goes very easily except for some brief sidehilling scree. There is a decent trail much of the way and I hit my first summit at 8:20am. My stay was brief as I really wanted to get across and back to 13,811 before any potential weather. If I'd known that the weather would stay beautiful all day my pace would have been much more lazy. The traverse across to 13,811 is lengthy but after about an hour with some up and down I reached my second summit of the day at 9:35am. I snacked on some homemade granola bars my friend had made to refuel and after about 15 minutes decided to start heading back.

The traverse back was tiring as I'd already done quite a bit of gain. I followed the faint trail and some cairns back around 13,832 at about 10:30am and started heading back to the Redcloud saddle.

I reached the saddle with Redcloud again at 11:15am and chilled out relaxing on the saddle and talking to other people headed up or down Redcloud. The solitude of the hike was great but it was nice to see people again.

I had told my friends I was aiming to be back by 1pm so I finally decided to get up and stop enjoying the great weather and headed down. At 12:50pm I got back to the parking area. Unfortunately since I'd loaned my friends my car for the day I also got to do about 3/4 mile of hiking on the road back up to our campsite. Finally at 1:15pm I got back to my tent. Awesome day and a great way to spend the 4th!
I did these peaks from Williams Creek with my white dog and saw you on the summit of Pt 13,811 as we ascended. Great day and nice fireworks later in Lake City in spite of the rain. The descent down the scree below the connecting ridge wasn‘t a lot of fun though.
What are we gonna do, chase each other? 7/6/2010 11:05pm
Hello John,
Last time it was Lackawanna, now these two but not quite as close. Looks like we will be off by about a week, so a thank you is in order for the photos and route narrative.
Jon, Thanks for posting the pics, my camera ran short of battery the day before when I did the same route, so I didn‘t get any shots. I climbed Half Peak on the 4th, loved that great weather.
Mike
