Manitou Springs Incline is Open
I attended the ribbon cutting this morning. The mayor's of both Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs were in attendance. Also I saw 4 of the 5 in the "500 Club". A lot of people I recognize from doing the Incline a lot. It was a nice hike up. The Incline looks a lot better. Noel was also there so 14ers.com was well represented.

A Good Time Was Had By All -
Except for the near riot when the bureaucrats kept DRONING
on and on and on - not allowing anyone to get warm by actually hiking !
The free Starbuck's coffee was great - until the porta-potties began to overflow.
On a positive note - The entire crew that actually did the work - The True Heroes -
were there. It was an honor to personally thank each of them.
On a second positive note - Yes, the incline has lost MUCH of it unique character
from the good old days (when it was illegal) - but now it is much more durable.
Third positive note. IT SNOWED !

Yeah, snow. I enjoy hiking it much more in the snow. and the run down Barr is much faster, and less people (none), often.

I was there, saw Noel on my way down the face. Cranked out a 36:21 which is not too bad seeing it's been closed for three months!

I was there with my wife Carol. She was one of those standing behind the ribbon-cutters, and was also one of the long, long list that got thanked by Karen Paulus (yeah, it was a pretty long speech...). But I think it's a good idea to be reminded sometimes how many people are working to make these things happen; after all, it'd be easier and cheaper to just put up a bigger and better fence than it was to open and repair the thing.

Yeah, we did talk to Roger. We also saw Noel on Barr Trail, and she mentioned seeing you. It was cool to see all the people who I "knew" from the net but hadn't met often (if at all).

Saw a nice article in the Post this week, it was big news that missed the front page by one! Climbed it for the 1st time last year! But Castle Rock has a mini-incline at Miller Park of 200 steps and went out one day and foolishly did a dozen climbs! Thinking it is short, I could hustle up, at the top I was huffing and puffing so bad from a hard effort without a warm-up that I puked my brains out! Returned each time quickly the way I came and bolted up again and again! Getting that breathing right is important and doing a warm-up is critical. I suffered with knee pain for 3 months afterwards, the pounding coming down was just brutal! Moral of the story: Don't go out and kill yourself on the 1st time out, work up and enjoy it before you get maniacal! Holy @#$T!!

"What's the Incline?"
From I-25 in Colorado Springs, take exit #141 (US 24), go west (towards the mountains) on US 24
for four miles to the Manitou Avenue exit. Go west on Manitou Avenue one and one-half miles
to Ruxton Avenue (traffic circle). Turn left and go to the top of Ruxton Avenue, three-quarters of a mile.
The COG Railway at the top of Ruxton is currently charging $10 for parking. There is free parking
close to the Manitou Visitor Center as you enter town with a free shuttle. Stop at the Visitor Center and
ask where it is.
