And I was with two other skiers.

Excellent snow coverage. It was only dry the first 50 yards out of the parking lot then continuous snow all the way to the summit. I used microspikes for a little extra traction on the approach and crampons above the lake. I started at 1130pm summited at 4:15am and waited to watch the sunrise. It was incredible.

Re: Mt Shasta, Avy Gulch Trail conditions
Kushrocks, Thanks for the report/inspiration. I went up avy gulch to summit on June 8. Snow is receding fast down low, a mix of snow and dirt trail to Horsecamp, then snow/slush. I left at 3:00 am, snow was firm down low and crisp up high. On the way back the snow had softened below about 12,500 ft., nice for glide-stepping. Wind was wicked up high, most climbers turned back claiming winds of 50-70 mph (I have no idea, just repeating what they said). But after driving from Kansas City and climbing 6000 vertical feet, I couldn't turn around. At least the wind was at my back while ascending the ridge above 13,000 ft., and I had the upper 1000 ft. of the mountain and the summit to myself. When I got back to the TH someone asked me how far up the mountain I'd climbed. I said that my summit climb was successful, but that if you view it as an IQ test, I probably failed.

Ascending Mt Shasta in the snow is a way better option: I did a summer ascent, it was all loose volcanic material, which was total energy drain on the way up, but made for awesome bounding with sliding on the way down!
Re: Mt Shasta, Avy Gulch Trail conditions
We climbed the Avalanche Gulch route 7/1 with good snow. We camped right below the lake, got a 2am start with a summit at 7:15am. Perfect weather day and beautiful on the summit! Better hurry up on this route because it was very warm and the snow is melting fast.
The summit is a source of power. The long view gives one knowledge and time to prepare. The summit, by virtue of the dizzying exposure, leaves one vulnerable. A bit of confidence and a dash of humility is all we get for our work. Yet to share these moments with friends is to be human. C. Anker

SummitStormer-did you go up the Clear Creek route? I'm considering climbing that in September since I had to turn back on Avy Gluch in May due to weather. I'd love any other info you can provide.SummitStormer wrote:Ascending Mt Shasta in the snow is a way better option: I did a summer ascent, it was all loose volcanic material, which was total energy drain on the way up, but made for awesome bounding with sliding on the way down!
