I'll echo what others have said. Be prepared for anything! The weather can change quickly from hot and dry to freezing and snow/rain. Something I didn't see mentioned - but didn't entirely read - fog. Lots of fog! I highly recommend a GPS or great map/compass skills. It is super easy to get lost in there when fog rolls in or sits up there for days. Once, I couldn't see more than 30 feet in front of me. Pretty nasty. It had also rained for a couple days straight so there was ZERO tracks in the sand. I actually thought I might be spending the night! And I wasn't prepared for that. Whodathunk one of my most life-threatening hikes was in Maui?!

I think I still have a hiking book somewhere.
- I didn't say it was your fault. I said I was blaming you.

If interested, I fixed the photos in my trip report from 2010:

I parked at the Halemau'u Trailhead, descended the pali trail to the Holua campsite, and then went up Sliding Sands Trail to the summit. I then retraced my route. I did it over 2 nights, but from Halemau'u Trailhead to Haleakala summit (or the reverse) can be done as a day trip no problem.
