Alaska Loop

Post by Muskie5280 »

I know there a few threads on Alaska and I've garnered a few ideas from them, but wanted to look for something a bit more targeted.

I'm heading to AK for my honeymoon in July and we're looking for a 2 night backpack loop out of Talkeetna or somewhere just west of there. We will be taking the train to Talkeetna and hiking out of there (We potentially could have our bikes).

Any suggestions/resources to find a 15-20 mile backing loop?

Thanks!

We've been eyeing Kesugi Ridge for a trip in June. The whole ridge from Byers Lake to Little Coal Creek is 27.5 miles, but you can cut it short by going to the Erimine Hill Trailhead if you don't want to do the full ridge.

I posted a thread awhile back that gave some good suggestions as well. http://www.14ers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=41966

I will be in Alaska from 7/8 to 7/18. I have work commitments until Friday afternoon, but plan to do some backcountry hiking and exploring. This is a great help!

Also, if anyone is looking for a reason to go to AK, but can't find a partner, shoot me a PM. I don't currently have any solid plans but would love some company!

A little off topic, but thought it might be worth a mention: halfway between Anchorage and Talkeetna is the Nancy Lake SRA. My wife and I did a back country canoe trip there and it was the highlight of our trip! The Park service has primitive cabins that can be reserved on various lakes/islands along the loop.

Might be hard to access if traveling by train. Definitely bring bug spray for the portages!
