May 5 is very early in the season to be going for the summit and conditions can be harsh, but for the most part at that point the circus hasn't arrived. I certainly understand the mentality. Being the only climbers above 14 Camp on the mountain is certainly desireable. As less and less qualified adventure tourists flock to mountains like Denali and Everest, climbers are forced to take greater risks to get the same experiences of the past. Its upsetting to say the least.

Either way, spending a night out on the pass or above is very bad news. May the fallen climber RIP.

Wow - those climbers were attempting a traverse of Denali from Wonder Lake. From the website that was day 20 of their traverse...

Could be the reason for the early season attempt. The river crossing gets really dangerous late season.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

We barely missed something like this coming down on the 26th of May last year. We were able to get through Denali Pass and onto the Autobahn just as a blow was coming in. The Polish team behind us got stuck overnight, and wound up with a climber with frostbite and a broken forearm from a fall that yanked one of the running belays out.

They were only an hour behind us. Just goes to show that even a well-planned trip can turn into a crapshoot.
