I enjoyed the Mountaineer's Route on Mt. Whitney. Good snow climb ... and aside from that first awkward mantle/bypass, I thought it was a really pleasant class 3 rock scramble, albeit short.

Contrary to some, I wouldn't call any part of it Class 4. (Coincidentally, now that I'm in Washington, I'd call lots of "Class 3" stuff I come across Class 4. It's insane how under-rated everything is here.)

Regardless, if you don't like something you come across on Whitney, if you traverse or explore, there's a good chance you can find other, easier options.

If you haven't already seen it, here's my TR on Whitney (Mountaineer's up; standard down):

Afternoon - Although I don't have much experience on the Colorado 14ers I have shot up the MR on Whitney. I felt the exposure and difficulty was significantly overstated. I did want to experience some of the scenery of the Whitney Trail and went for the loop, MR up, WT down. If you are even considering the MR I doubt going up the Whitney trail would be all that much fun. Good luck!

If you're thinking about doing it this year or anytime soon, at present it looks very dry, apart from a sliver of snow in the bottom third.
