You can get solo permit if you have experience with solo climbing on similar or more difficult mountains. I've listed my solo experience from himalayas and solo permit for Rainier was granted within 24 hours.

The DC route is already looking very interesting this year and it is only June. When I did it last year in July, we didn't have to cross anything like this:

Its more along the lines of you need to have proved that you've climbed much more difficult mountains than Rainier before they allow you to climb Rainier solo. A friend of mine, Sean O'Rourke, tried to get a solo permit and was denied, even with his extensive climbing resume.

Wow-those pics sure make it look like the conditions are interesting right now. I leave Monday to climb the DC route with RMI. Frankly glad we will be guided. Very,
very stoked to get there!

Pretty early in the year for the mountain to look like that.

(other routes are on the right side of the page).

Anyone else have any recent reports/stories, especially from the DC or Emmons-Winthrop?
Thanks!

We did the DC on Thurs/Fri night w RMI...to tired at the moment for a report, but your link from the 1st looks accurate (5-6 ladders, 2/3 of the cleaver is all rock). I'll have plenty of photos available in a day or two, PM if you want the link. Until then, I can also send the GPX, though the route is changing pretty frequently.

Hoping for solo approval for end of the month, but these pictures do not inspire confidence.
I am unable to walk away from the mountain without climbing it. An unclimbed mountain tugs at my consciousness with the eternal weight of time itself. Until I've pressed my face into it's alpine winds, hugged it's ancient granite walls, and put it's weathered summit beneath my heal I'm unable to resist it's attraction.Knowing nature gives the mountain more time than she gives us adds urgency to the obsession. As has been said before; the mountain doesn't care.

It can wait forever. I cannot.

Later in the month could certainly be different, but at this point it is still not a deal breaker regarding the crevasse issues in the photos (rockfall may be a different issue...). The ladders are maintained by the guide companies, and the couple of more airy ones (either tight corners around them) have running belays in addition. Maybe just leave stay close to a guided group to make sure the ladders are set...
