I've been following this all weekend, very sad situation for the people there. I have never been but have wanted to and hope to one day. I just made a small donation to Samaritan's Purse for relief efforts. Here is a link to all the groups helping out now.
http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/25/world/nep ... index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And if you want to make sure you give to the right group you can check them out here,
http://www.charitynavigator.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The avalanche video from Everest BC was incredible, with all the fog they didn't see it coming until it was right on top of them.

Good for you. I made a small contribution, too, to Global Giving. Every dollar helps. If each one of us just gave up a weekend's worth of gas money - the money we'd use to get to a mountain trailhead next weekend - it would add up to a lot of contributions.

It only seems fitting that a group of people who have one thing in common - mountains - would want to come to the aid of the people who have been catering to mountaineers for decades, and helping them reach their goals on the world's biggest peaks.

Where there are mountains, there are likely quakes raising them.
The Front Range has had only one moderately large natural quake in historic times- a M6.6 in 1882. People have studied potential faults and dug some fault trenches to look for large earlier quakes, but the data is ambiguous. The maximum size could just be M7. There isn't a lot of Money to study low seismic areas like Colorado, so it isn't well known yet.

Just got the news from Tibet - the Chinese have cancelled all mountaineering for the season.

Pemba Sherpa, a CMC member who lives in Boulder and guides climbing trips, is raising money to rebuild his village near Mt. Everest. The funds he raises will be used directly to rebuild people's homes (~$1000 per home).

Thank you for that link!

FYI, Pemba Sherpa is also the owner of Sherpa Restaurant & Bar on Walnut St (http://www.sherpasrestaurant.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). Might also consider giving him some business, and enjoying some tasty Sherpa, Nepalese and Tibetan food in the process :)

That place is amazing! Good to know. Really enjoy their food and their outdoor seating. Environment is wonderful.

There a several members of the Vail/Eagle Valley community that have direct family ties to the small villages surrounding Mt Everest. It sounds like their families are physically in good shape, but many no longer have homes, or their neighbors no longer have homes. If people are interested in contributing directly those communities affected, there was an article in today's paper with some information on their grassroots efforts. There is also a benefit dinner Monday at 6pm in Edwards for anyone up this way:

One of the few bright spots is the time of year this happened. They'll have several summer months to build some shelters before winter returns.

Interesting discussion on the geology involved. Parts of Kathmandu for example were lifted 3 feet by the quake.
