Re: Orizaba, anyone?
So the Canchola fee included 4x4, meals, and stay for 2 nights (Night #1 and Night #3), water?
Think $600 should be enough?

You are responsible for food when you're on the mountain, but yes, they supplied transportation up/down the mountain, two nights stay, meals when you are at Concholas, water, and gas for a stove. Very helpful and friendly people; I highly recommend them.

American Airlines $342, but now you have to stop in Dallas. Still a pretty decent price.

Logistics Question
So duffel bag and heavy pack: Duffel bag for things you're not taking on an actual climb (extra clothing, sneakers for walking around town, etc) I get can stay at Cancholas compound while climbing Orizaba, but what about after Orizaba and a rest day at Tlachichuca to recharge your batteries? What I mean is you then transfer to Amecameca/La Joya to do Ixta, where does that duffel bag get stored? Do we then either just hide the duffel bag near LaJoya along with tent and sleeping bag off the beaten path or rent a hotel room at Amecameca prior to making it up to La Joya?
Also to give the Canchola family their due credit I've heard either their website or email uses a 3rd party that takes an unfairly large cut. Do you send them some kind of deposit via PayPal in good faith and is that done in pesos or USD?
Just trying to wrap my head around some of these little details.
Thanks,
Tim

Re: Orizaba, anyone?
Looking at going, it seems like a good introduction to 15-18ers.
But am I physically and technically ready for it? I don't know. How do I practice? How do I know when I'm in the right aerobic and mental state?

Re: Logistics Question
We used a driver to get from the Cancholas house to La Joya. He stopped in Amecameca so we could pick up supplies on the way and also stored our duffles while we did Izta. We camped just past the TH and stashed our tent and sleeping bags in the bushes while we were hiking. I've also heard of people getting a cheap hotel to store their belongings and just renting a car to get around. We didn't want to mess around with renting a car as we'd heard some not so good things. We only paid $100 per person for transportation from Cancholas to La Joya and then to our hotel in Mexico City near the airport (plus he even brought us each a taco plate and beverages for when we finished the hike). Message me if you want his contact info.timf wrote:So duffel bag and heavy pack: Duffel bag for things you're not taking on an actual climb (extra clothing, sneakers for walking around town, etc) I get can stay at Cancholas compound while climbing Orizaba, but what about after Orizaba and a rest day at Tlachichuca to recharge your batteries? Good questions. I wonder that myself, my answer/plan is running, climbing, climbing at altitude, and maybe a couple 14er summit camps.dr_j wrote: But am I physically and technically ready for it? I don't know. How do I practice? How do I know when I'm in the right aerobic and mental state?

Re: Orizaba, anyone?
Would anyone be interested in Orizaba and/or Iztaccihuatl (and/or other potential objectives) in the timeframe between Christmas and New Years?
