I've been trying to price out a rental to see if it makes sense.
To me it doesn't make sense, but perhaps others have a different opinion. Buses go to every town in Mexico and usually they are very convenient. Driving tends to be hectic and expensive.
I understand that buses are cheap, but my issue is having the freedom to go where i please, and I also tend to sleep in my car, so it serves double duty. It also gives me some security to lock my stuff up. Right now i'm looking at a mid size sedan, which will cost $350 for the 9 days i'm down there even with the extra supplemental liability insurance. My amex card will give me full damage waiver for $25/rental, so for $375 I've got my freedom and a place to sleep for $40/day. If i split that in half with a climbing partner, then its $20 a day. However right now I'm possibly going solo.

I'm not saying i will sleep in the car the entire trip, but it'll probably happen on a few nights. However a Jeep would give me some extra flexibility to explore around if i find some dirt roads to drive. From what I've read, it seems like driving around Mexico is fine as long as you stay off the roads at night (drunk drivers, etc).

Apparently there is a new book on Orizaba. Looks pretty good so far.

The author made mention of this in another Orizaba thread I think. I'd like to read it but I don't have a kindle, nor do I want one. I prefer books you can hold.

Hey Corduroy! I will be setting up a Kickstarter for a print edition over the weekend. The idea is if I can get 50-100 committed buyers it brings the printing costs way down. I'm with you on books--specifically guidebooks. They end up like souvenirs of a trip. Kindle does have phone (iOS / Android) apps and desktop readers if it's just the lack of the eReader itself.

mtn_nut: Thanks for the feedback! I'm around if you have any questions. I check in here several times a week and I'm also around on Twitter ( @antivoyages ).

I saw this post and hesitated to answer initially. I've never climbed from the south. If you're driving in the region Orizaba / Cordoba / Fortin de las Flores look quaint and interesting. There's also an aerial tramway from Orizaba to a natural park above town with views to the mountain.

The drive on the eastern side of the mountain from Coscomatepec up to Xalapa on 125 was incredible. Maybe think twice about driving up to the huts in a 2WD vehicle, though. Some guys from Outdoor Research got a jeep stuck on a trip they took recently: https://vimeo.com/138548519" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . I myself have gotten out and pushed along with a team of five Mexican guys to push a light pickup truck out of ruts in the mud.

I would be in for a book. Any chances the book would be available before Christmas?

Fyi, I also prefer pdf over ebook formats since I can print PDF pages easily.

I'll tailor the dates to ship the first or second week of December. Will post back when the Kickstarter is approved. If you need it a little earlier I may be able to accommodate that with a limited number of proof copies.

Amazon is the 80 lb gorilla that sells 80% of all eBooks and they demand exclusivity to their platform for the first 90 or 180 days... I am looking at some of the other book platforms when the period is up. Do you have a favorite?
