Kilamanjaro record ascent route?

Post by mikefromcraig »

I have been trying to figure out Kilian's route for his record ascent/descent on Kilamanjaro.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjZH6CfKLxE" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; According to this video and reports I have read he did the Umbwe route. However, 3:35 into this video he says that it got real hard at the camp at arrow glacier.

According to this route map, the Umbwe route would not go through the Arrow Glacier camp: http://kilimanjaroroutes.com/Umbwe%20Route.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So, did he go up Umbwe and then, instead of turning East at Barranco camp. just keep going North through arrow glacier instead?

On a related note, I read that all three recent record holders did the Umbwe route. Why not do the Shira route instead? It is only slightly longer and has far, far less elevation gain. http://www.ultimatekilimanjaro.com/shira_route.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
