Please stay on the trail.

Postby 8000too » 28 Sep 2012, 09:50

The tundra above treeline is very fragile and has a very short growing season. Please make efforts to preserve its beauty.

Please:
Stay on the trail. Don't form a new trail by walking on level, soft tundra.
Take break on rocks. Walking on durable surfaces like rock goes a long way to preservation.
Down hill traffic yields to uphill. No need to leave trail to pass others on the trail. Just pull over on a rock.
Urinate on rocks and not the tundra. Marmots will eat the tundra if saturated with salt rich urine.

Please get the word out and say something to others, this is our playground.

I was on Mount Elbert this last weekend and saw some pretty ridiculous trail formation. Check out the pics, a new trail is forming when there is already seven!

I saw a guy doing that with his Hummer. It looked like he was having fun. He had an REI sticker on the bumper. Typical.

But where I hike, there are usually no trails...

Since it's on Elbert, I'm guessing mountain bikes have played a role in the trail braiding

It seems most hikers on this route also go "off-trail" a lot.

I'd guess that one good solid trail that isn't a six-inch-wide trench would encourage hikers to stay on one route here. These look like social trails.
