Maps

Hello,
Where can you find topo/trail maps? I looked at the usgs site and all they had were topo maps without trails for download.

caltopo.com is amazing. It takes a bit of time to master, but is my source for printing paper maps for my trips. The gradient slope shader is incredibly useful to better understand avalanche danger and route difficulty.

Well, if you're looking for maps of the 14er trails, they are all included in the route descriptions. :)

On a route, just click on the TOPO MAP tab or use the GOOGLE MAP tab to display the route with a route line overlay and various map layers, including slope shading. Then you can just print the maps out of your browser. AND if you're on the TOPO MAP tab, look for the "Expand" icon to the right of the map, which links to a much larger, higher-resolution topo of the area. AAND if just want to download a USGS quad map, use the quad map links on the left of the stats area on each route description.

I often have custom topo maps made at:
http://www.mytopo.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You can customize the size, zoom level, and area of coverage. They print them on good water-resistant stock. Rather than take a couple of standard USGS maps, you can design a map that encompasses the exact area you are interested in. Can be smaller or larger than standard USGS maps. And price is about the same as what you'd pay for a USGS topo in a store. Fourteener routes are typically so well travelled you can often get by without a detailed topo map. But many thirteeners don't have trails, which means that a good topo map is essential.

On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters." - Norman Maclean

Bill has a 14er app that you can download with all the route descriptions and pics. You can even "pre download" everything for the peaks you anticipate climbing in case you have no reception!

I have ordered three maps from here:

https://www.pptrailmaps.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You can also download them in .pdf to your phone from App Store/Google Play.

Local company too, located in the Springs.

Another good free site for topo maps is the Colorado Hunting Atlas.
http://ndismaps.nrel.colostate.edu/inde ... ntingAtlas" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You can search locations from throughout Colorado.
Click on Switch Base Map and select USA topo maps. This view shows many of the 4WD and numbered hiking trials. It also allows you to view, input and label waypoints. Then printing the maps is fairly easy.

Good Luck.

You can drill down to anyplace and then choose from a variety of maps for that particular area. Download for free.

Edit: Oh, read the OP closer. Yeah, you are right, the USGS maps don't have accurate trails. Sadly, the USFS maps don't, either. Nevermind.
