Recent Berthoud Avalanche

Post by skier25 »

Just found out about the recent avalanche that occurred on Berthoud Pass today (12/19/09). They don't think anyone was buried - I truly hope no one was harmed.

"GRAND COUNTY - An avalanche near the top of Berthoud Pass put rescue workers on alert on Saturday afternoon.
The Grand County Sheriff's Office says the avalanche was near the west side of Highway 40 and a person who saw the snow slide thought there was a person either very close or in part of the avalanche and was not sure if the person made it out.
Grand County Search and Rescue crews responded and did a search. They were helped out by Alpine Search and Rescue and a Flight for Life helicopter.
They determined no one was buried in the avalanche. (Copyright KUSA*TV, All Rights Reserved)" http://www.9news.com/news/article.aspx? ... &catid=188" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I found out about this from a thread over at TGR - gotta name my source... http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/show ... p?t=179384" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I get acute mountain sickness when I am away from the mountains.

I saw all of the EMS and SAR vehicles up there at approx 330pm yesterday on my way back from WP. I saw several recent looking slides during the drive over the pass.
I don't commute by bicycle everyday out of goodwill for the environment. Although, it is a positive externality. ~rangerdrew

Photo with notes from the Teton Gravity Research thread:

It sounds like a slide was created but no one was caught:

"Supposedly, the mystery Dumbass headed off into Current Creek and failed to call SAR to tell them that his ass was alright."
