Anyone know the conditions of Handies Peak via the American Basin trailhead? I'm going to be there this coming weekend 6/12-13.
Thank you.

There's gonna be a lot less snow now than is shown in these photos.

Thanks Benners! I read that trip report. Looks like a great time. I just noticed on weather.com that scattered thunderstorms are forecasted for Friday through Monday for Lake City. I thought maybe that would end up being snow at elevation but don't know Colorado weather.

Here is a photo I took of Handies and American Basin yesterday afternoon from Sundog. It has been really hot around here lately and the snow is rapidly disappearing.

The Dalai Lama when asked what surprised him most about humanity:
“Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

Thanks for that photo, PKelley. Compared to benners' TR it looks like the snow is melting really fast.
Okie, there's about an equal chance that those mountains would get rain or snow at high elevations this weekend... but it doesn't really matter, the snow is going to be slushy anyway. Bring snowshoes, be early, be ready for postholing (ommmm...) and watch out on steep slopes.

The greater danger, for most of us, is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low, and we reach it.
