Sneffels Conditions via YBB?

Post by snvts82 »

Anyone been up Sneffels yet via Yankee Boy Basin. I'm just looking to hike it saturday. I have snowshoes but no crampons. I read the topic from a couple weeks ago but didnt really know how the actually trail conditions were. Thanks

I climbed/skied Sneffels from YBB via the birthday (south) chutes on May 29, and it was continuous snow above 11,500', although it was melting fast. My guess is that it's still continuous snow above 12,000' right now. Another guy hiked it that day without needing his snowshoes (but I think he did use crampons on the climb proper). I'd recommend axe and crampons if you're climbing on firm snow. If you want to see some pictures of the area, check out my TR of nearby Mt Emma from May 30.
