CAIC- Sangres. Why no report?

Post by hollamby »

Hey everyone,

Was wondering why CAIC isn't reporting conditions for the Sangres? For a while I just thought it was because of the lack of snow, but they have snow and still not reporting. I know they say "The CAIC has insufficient information to establish an avalanche danger rating." But why is this?

My brother is driving out from NY this Friday and has a big group of peaks to climb. Want to head up to the Crestones, so he can enjoy the Sangres. He's hoping to get 10 more peaks or so under his belt while he is here, should be fun!

Thanks guys and gals,
Ryan

From what I understand, the CAIC staff administers avalanche reports based, in part, on snowpack observations made by CAIC staff, ski patrol, highway departments, and the general public. The Sangres see relatively little traffic. There are no (operational) ski resorts and the only highway corridor through the zone is La Veta pass. So they get few firsthand observations from the Sangres, resulting in insufficient data for a comprehensive report. They do discuss recent weather for the area and share what observations they do have. Occasionally someone from CAIC staff will head down there and they will issue a rating.

Sounds like your brother has a fun trip planned. CAIC would certainly appreciate observations from the area while he is there.
