Quandary Peak - East Ridge

Post by Dchild10 »

Is there any considerable avy danger on the East ridge currently? I snowshoed this route last year in January and wanted to take a friend up tomorrow. We plan to snowshoe up and snowboard down. Any concerns/advice?

The CAIC is currently rating the avalanche danger for that aspect and location to be considerable. You may be able to find a safe way up but, you will need to be careful, capable of identifying avalanche terrain and willing to turn around if need be.

The east ridge is essentially avalanche-proof, so long as you stay on the ridge proper. At any given time that there is snow on the ground, there is likely a trench all the way to the summit.

Thanks, we completed the route with no problem. There was no trail above 11,800', but we followed roughly the same route I remembered doing a few years ago and broke trail up to a very cold and windy summit.
