Mount Elbert summit register gone?

Post by Jean-Francois Gout »

Hi everyone,

I hiked my first American 14er last week and I was disappointed when I realized that there was no register book at the top of Mount Elbert! I've read online that there should be one. So, is it gone or was I just so tired that I did not find it?
If anyone has information about the Mount Elbert register, please share.
Thanks,

Jean-François

If you don't sign the register it doesn't count!!

Just kidding. Many summit registers have gone missing in the last few years. Also, it may have been under some snow.

I blame Bigfoot and his strict LNT ethos. He's always hiding those things or packing them out.

Congrats!

On page 25 of the current Colorado Mountain Club (CMC) Board Manual (posted on their website) the following statement is made:
"Peak Registers
 The CMC will endeavor to maintain registers on peaks, especially 14ers. [passed October 1980]"

The manual is posted online at: http://www.cmc.org/about/docs/CMCBoardManual.pdf
We did not think of the great open plains, the beautiful rolling hills, and winding streams... as "wild". Only to the white man was nature a "wilderness".

I was up on Elbert yesterday. Didn't see the official register, but there were a few sheets of paper and some pens stashed under a rock. As Brian said, the "official" one is probably buried under the snow inside one of the wind breaks.

Thanks for the information guys.

I wish I saw the sheets of papers... I guess it means I'll have to go back :)
